Chapter Fourteen

Calliope

I stir when the door closes with a loud thump. Blinking my eyes quickly, I try to see in the dimly lit room.

“Emily,” I call out, but only silence answers me. I say the name again as I move, finding I’m finally no longer tied to the wall. Rolling off the air mattress, I crawl along the floor to the other side. Emily’s bed is gone, along with Emily.

I stand up quickly, closing my eyes as the room spins, almost knocking me on my ass. I run to the door and start pounding on it. “Give me back my daughter. Now. I’ll tear your limbs off if you don’t give me my daughter in the next two minutes. I promise you that I’ll kill you slowly,” I scream. My hands hurt with the continuous pounding.

The door flies open, and I almost fall forward when the man pushes me backwards, making the fall on my ass a reality.

“Your daughter is fine for now.” The man licks his lips as he steps forward. Squatting down, he stares at me while I get a real good look at him. My mouth opens wide as I recognize him.

“You’re Hank. You’re the building manager for the entire block. Why would you take a child? She doesn’t deserve all of this.” I sob. “Kill me, not her. Let her go. Emily is a young child who doesn’t know anything about being a shifter.”

“She’s perfect for what I have planned. Why don’t you take a walk with me?” Hank roughly grabs my forearm and puts my hands in the ropes that weaken me. “Your animal is suppressed but I’ve been perfecting these ropes, so if you have strength then your shit out of luck.” I struggle but they tighten. “Walk now.” He pushes me.

I walk out the door, seeing we’re in an old warehouse with steel beams. There are doors where other shifters are being held—or even worse, killed. Hank pushes on my back and I stumble a little, almost falling. I catch myself but stop dead when I see Emily lying on a makeshift hospital bed, hooked up to machines.

“What are you doing to her?” I rush toward her but I’m stopped by two men strapped with machine guns. “Emily!” I yell around them, but she’s sleeping. I start to take inventory of the different machines. I see a heart monitor and an IV machine with three bags of clear solution.

“Let me walk you through the process.” Hank leans into my ear. “Follow me.”

I follow because I need to know what is going on with my daughter. The suppressants are not only keeping my eagle quiet, but my eyesight is compromised too.

Eagles are known for many qualities, including their eyesight, fearlessness, their love of their babies. The term mama bear is for being overprotective, but the love of an eagle parent is one of truth and smothering.

Hank stops abruptly when he realizes as he was talking, I wasn’t paying attention. “Are you listening to me?” He slaps me across the face.
